November 13, 2017 – Snowpack Update – Togwotee Pass Area – East Breccia Drainage

Nov 13, 2017

A quick trip up to Togwotee Pass for a dig and a tour on Breccia Peak provided beautiful blue skies, some great turns and favorable observations in the snowpack.

While our observations today suggested the snowpack is trending towards stability…we had a few take aways.

Cons:

  • The snowpack is very difficult to interpret
  • The basal snowpack has several facet/crust combinations
  • The snowpack height of 116cm is still considered shallow
  • There is significantly less snow on southerly aspects (not to mention a wicked melt freeze crust)

Pros:

  • The snowpack is gaining strength
  • The snowpack is settling and compressing are space out of the facet layers
  • There is not a good bed surface for sliding
  • Failures in tests are under crusts
